ALICJA KARSKA & ALEKSANDRA WENT – WITHOUT A DATE / THE MINIATURES WITHOUT A DATE is a collection of images presenting simple geometrical compositions with a woman. Its surrounding is creased and unreal, only the person is natural/realistic. This situation might have a love story in the background, may still remain in the past or be a sign of a strong emotional tension. THE MINIATURES is a series of photographs derived from puppet house interiors. The work is a play between proportions, illusions and reality. The images are rooted in everyday life and present a natural landscape, where ‘something’ is missing – a space after a house. These photographs are an example of a contrast between our imagination of a perfect beautiful house (puppet house) and reality (an empty space after a house).
VÁCLAV MAGID - CONVALESCENCE „But convalescence is like a return to childhood. The convalescent, like the child, enjoys to the highest degree the faculty of taking a lively interest in things, even the most trivial in appearance. Let us hark back, if we can, by a retrospective effort of our imaginations, to our youngest, our morning impressions, and we shall recognize that they were remarkably akin to the vividly coloured impressions that we received later on after a physical illness, provided that illness left our spiritual faculties pure and unimpaired.“ Charles Baudelaire, The Painter of Modern Life „I was surprised, however, to find, upon his having made the circuit of the square, that he turned and retraced his steps. Still more was I astonished to see him repeat the same walk several times - once nearly detecting me as he came round with a sudden movement.“ Edgar Allan Poe, The Man of the Crowd
TOMÁŠ MAKARA - GUESTS A guest book is a rather ordinary object found in all galleries. It serves not only as a documentation technique of visitors, but also and most importantly as a medium for the spectator, who can express his opinion on the functioning of a respective gallery, on contemporary art as such, or use it for his own artistic production, so often represented on city walls or billboards of political parties. GUEST thematizes contemporary visual art as well as the archetype of the artist, while it simultaneously researches and confronts the perception of an average contemporary art consumer. The exhibition is rooted in authentic guest book material, accessible in all contemporary art galleries. The main focus of the artist is directed to the rather aggressive reactions and approaches to what is exhibited in spaces of contemporary art. The exhibition works with “primitive” definitions of art, appropriated from various illustrated encyclopedias for children and popular publications targeting the wide lay public. All found visual and textual information is accumulated and positioned in a new context.
